Welcome to Magic: The Gathering at Fat Cat Books!

We are currently running tounaments in a loose Type 1 format. Because no one has yet to play any of the power 9 cards ( Ancestral Recall, Black Lotus, the 5 Moxes, Timetwister, Timewalk ) or any other of the really juicy overpowered and unbalanced ancient cards, I've been able to relax the format for a more original and creative atmosphere where rogue decks and casual players can thrive. Not to mention, I like to keep things as unpredictable and chaotic as possible. So far, there has been no reason to follow the actual DCI banned and restricted list; but, of course action will be taken if there are issues. Mostly, I've been trying to keep it managable for the casually competitive player......that means you don't have to recycle your collection to play here. Keep it. Play with it. Win with it. Above all, have fun with it.
           Metagame:
This is a term reserved for competitive players. It basically means what kind of decks you can expect to encounter in the course of a tournament. As far as tournaments at Fat Cat go, there is no metagame. Well, there is, but don't expect to be able to prepare for it by checking out gaming magazines and websites. The only way to know what to expect here is to come in and play. Perhaps later on there will be decks posted here or on my own site (link at the bottom), but for now you'll just have to experiment.

            Open Gaming:
Open Magic play and trading is scheduled for Wednesdays and Thursdays every week from around 3:00pm until closing, which is 8:30pm; of course you can always come in whenever and do this, or play some friendly games on our Saturdays, but you'll usually only find a bunch of Poke'mon players here on any other day. These are the times that are reserved for us. Who knows, if enough people show up and want to play in a tournament on a Wednesday or Thursday, we could definitely do that. Of course the format will be determined by a majority rule vote.

           Tournaments:
Tournaments are sheduled for the 1st, 3rd, and sometimes 5th Saturdays of every month, starting around 1:00pm or so, but if you're not sure what's happenning don't be afraid to call. There is a $3.00 entry fee; two thirds of the pool goes to first place, and one third to second. The judge is me, your good friend Bryce, hi, how are ya? But any big rules issues that I can't figure out (I've been playing for over six years, but nobody's perfect) are usually figured out by everyone collectively. The type of rules used are determined by majority rule vote before every tournament. That would be pre-sixth edition and post-sixth edition. We usually go by post-sixth edition, but I'm alway's hoping that someone will side with me for once. *sigh*

                      Banned and Restricted list:
As I mentioned before, the banned and restricted list for tournaments at the 'cat is meant to encourage a casual, friendly and fun atmosphere. Although this list is just for tournaments, I recommend that you stick to it for open play as well, lest you be pantsed and hung up in the bathroom by the other players.....hey, I can't be responsible for what happens to you for playing 4 Channels in a deck. So now, without further ado.......I present to you the banned and restricted list.

           Legal Sets:
All basic sets and extensions of the basic sets, all expansion sets, and all promo cards are legal. This means no Portal, Unglued, and definitely no cards from collector's sets or the World Championship decks.
    Restricted                                                                      Banned

At Fat Cat, at least as far as Magic goes, we have a certain code of conduct mainly regarding play and deck construction. Just follow these few simple words: keep the cheese to a minimum and don't abuse the freedom of the banned and restricted list. I urge you not to test me on this. You have now been fairly warned.
                      Learning to Play:
If you don't know how to play Magic and would like to learn, or you've just started playing and want some help; that's one of the reasons why I am here. Just drop me an email and we'll figure something out.
